February 9 - 17, 2019
What could be better than spending a week exploring the "Garden Island" of Kauai with Mason, Jeff and a bunch of friends?
Next February we will take our annual photography adventure to warmer climes. We'll photograph Kauai's visual treasures including Waimea Canyon, the sunny South Shore, the emerald jungle of the North Shore, and Everywhere else! The group will stay at two locations during the week, allowing us to properly cover the entire island's incredible sights. We'll even take chartered helicopter flights over the epic mountains and valleys of the rugged island. This will be our most incredible adventure yet!
We will stay three nights in sunny and friendly Poipu on the island's South Shore, which will allow us to make day trips up into Waimea Canyon, (The Grand Canyon of Hawaii), explore the old sugar plantations in the area, and chase the sunsets on the glorious beaches there. The last four nights of the trip will be spent on the far North Shore where the mountains plunge into the sea and the jungle is thick and colorful. On the North Shore we'll have access to lovely little villages, a lighthouse, and several amazing beaches where the winter waves will certainly give us something to gawk at. Both sets of accommodations will be in comfortable and clean establishments within walking distance of the beach. All accommodations on the island are included in the trip price. If you are traveling solo, you will pay the single rate. If you will be bringing a roommate, you can choose the double rate.
BIRD'S EYE VIEWS
I've never had the opportunity to offer a helicopter charter on my trips, but now I have a doozy. We will be flying over the entire island for at least 60 minutes, taking in the roadless and wild Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and other treats we can only experience from the air. These flights will be in helicopters with NO DOORS, so you will have the chance to shoot unimpeded. I will be providing instruction on how to make epic photos from a helicopter, so come ready for one of the most exciting shoots of your life.
A WILDLY DYNAMIC SCHEDULE
The island of Kauai presents a wide variety of photo subjects. We have idyllic beaches, stark canyons, crashing surf, exotic wildlife, even more exotic plants, interesting locals, charming villages and vistas aplenty to inspire us. The weather in the islands during February is great for photography. We should enjoy a delightful mix of rain, sun and clouds that will set the land and sea into dramatic moods. With all of this incredible scenery, we will keep a flexible schedule that will allow us to find the best locations for the weather and light conditions we encounter. Being as Kauai is fairly compact, we will be able to get to these places without spending hours in the vans. It is sure to be an adventure!
INSTRUCTION, OR NOT. IT'S UP TO YOU
A trademark of my workshops is the tag-team instruction of myself and Jeff Carlson. Jeff and I bring a wealth of photography and technology experience and knowledge, but we are first and foremost people people. We understand that sometimes you just want to be left alone to enjoy the moment and follow your muse. We also know that sometimes the group is is the mood for an epic hours-long discourse on processing or technique. We will be along to guide you to wonderful places and if you want help capturing them, we will enthusiastically help you. Think of us as your two coffee-loving friends who are along for the fun.
FOOD & DRINK
Rumor has it the island of Kauai is crawling with wild chickens. Roosters to be exact. I am sure we will find enough local restaurants and drinking establishments to satisfy us so we won't have to resort to chasing down the feral feathered noise-makers for lunch. On this trip, as with all of my trips, we will seek out the best spots to dine or pick up the supplies we will need to make a great picnic. I will also have all of the best coffee shops and shave ice joints cased out ahead of time so we will always be within range of our fix. If there is good ice cream on the island, we will find that too. While I will guide you to the food and drinks, they are not included in the workshop price.
